Japan has many volcanoes, so hot water rises from deep underground. That is an onsen.

The place where the water is born is called the gensen, the source. Every onsen is different — its color, its scent, and its kōnō, the good it does for the body.
昔から、日本の人は温泉で体を休めてきました。温泉は、日本の大切な文化です。
For centuries, people in Japan have come to hot springs to rest. The onsen is a treasured part of Japanese culture.
