Hakone Onsen is a popular hot spring destination in Kanagawa Prefecture. It takes about an hour and a half by train from Shinjuku in Tokyo to Hakone-Yumoto Station. You can visit on a day trip, but Hakone is spread out across the mountains, so staying one night lets you enjoy it at a relaxed pace.

Hakone has 17 hot-spring districts known together as Hakone Jūshichitō. The color and scent of the water differ from place to place. Besides baths at ryokan, there are hot springs open to day visitors and open-air baths where you can soak while looking at the scenery outside.

Besides hot springs, Lake Ashi and Owakudani are also popular. On clear days, you can sometimes see Mount Fuji from near Lake Ashi. At Owakudani, you can enjoy the sight of white volcanic plumes and the famous black eggs. Volcanic gases are present, so read the guidance carefully and follow the rules. Riding trains, buses, the ropeway, and boats is another fun part of traveling around Hakone.

Depending on the ryokan, after bathing you can eat seasonal dishes, wear a yukata, and relax. Mountain weather can change quickly, and higher areas can be cold, so it is reassuring to bring comfortable walking shoes and a jacket. Before heading out, check the current transport information too.
