湯 Kanji

湯ゆ means hot water and can also refer to a bath. The usual everyday word is お湯ゆ: warm or hot water for tea, washing, or bathing. It does not have to be boiling. At an onsen, it often means the bathwater.

The two main readings are ゆ, as in 湯船ゆぶね (bathtub) and 湯気ゆげ (steam), and とう, as in 銭湯せんとう (public bathhouse) and 熱湯ねっとう (boiling or scalding water). Learn each word's full reading with the examples below.

  • お湯ゆをください。

    Some hot water, please.

  • お湯ゆを沸わかして、お茶ちゃを入いれます。

    I boil some water and make tea.

  • このお湯ゆは少すこし熱あついです。

    This water is a little hot.

  • 温泉おんせんのお湯ゆは気持きもちがいいです。

    The hot spring water feels nice.

  • お湯ゆが出でません。

    No hot water is coming out.

  • 熱湯ねっとうに気きをつけてください。

    Please be careful of the scalding water.

  • やかんから湯気ゆげが出でています。

    Steam is coming from the kettle.

  • 湯船ゆぶねにつかると、体からだが温あたたまります。

    Soaking in the bath warms me up.

  • 湯船ゆぶねに入はいる前まえに、体からだを洗あらいます。

    I wash my body before getting into the bath.

    I do not use soap in the bath itself.
