消えた部屋の鍵
The Missing Room Key
夕食の前に
田中さんは、一人で山の中の旅館に泊まりに来ました。
Tanaka came alone to stay at an inn in the mountains.
夕食の前に温泉に入りました。お湯は温かくて、とても気持ちがよかったです。
Before dinner, he went into the hot spring. The water was warm and felt wonderful.
「いいお風呂だったなあ。おなかもすいたし、部屋に戻ろう。」
“That was a lovely bath. I’m hungry, too. I’ll head back to my room.”
鍵はどこ？
しかし、部屋の前に着いたとき、鍵がないことに気がつきました。
But when he reached his room, he realized he didn’t have his key.
「あれ？ 鍵はどこだろう。」
“Huh? Where could my key be?”
小さなかばんの中を探しましたが、見つかりません。タオルの間にもありませんでした。
He searched inside his small bag, but couldn’t find it. It wasn’t among his towels, either.
「困ったな。どこかに落としてしまったのかな。」
“Oh dear. I wonder if I dropped it somewhere.”
田中さんは、お風呂の入り口まで戻りました。いすの下や、スリッパを置く棚の近くを探しました。でも、鍵はありません。
Tanaka went back to the entrance to the bath. He looked under the chairs and near the shelf for slippers. But the key wasn’t there.
一緒に探しましょう
そこへ、旅館の人が来ました。
Just then, a member of the inn’s staff came over.
「どうしましたか。」
“What’s the matter?”
「部屋の鍵が見つからないんです。」
“I can’t find my room key.”
「そうですか。どこで最後に使いましたか。」
“I see. Where did you last use it?”
「部屋を出たときです。その後、お風呂に入りました。」
“When I left my room. After that, I went to the bath.”
旅館の人も一緒に探してくれましたが、鍵は見つかりませんでした。
The staff member helped him look, but they couldn’t find the key.
「お風呂の中に落としたかもしれません……。」
“I might have dropped it in the bath…”
田中さんは心配になりました。
Tanaka began to worry.
「大丈夫ですよ。もう一度、かばんの中を見てみましょう。」
“It’ll be all right. Let’s look in your bag one more time.”
小さな音
田中さんがかばんを持ち上げたとき、小さな音がしました。
When Tanaka lifted his bag, there was a small sound.
カチャッ。
Clink.
「あれ？ 今、浴衣の袖の中から音がしましたよ。」
“Oh? That sound just came from inside your yukata sleeve.”
田中さんは袖の中に手を入れました。何か硬い物があります。
Tanaka reached into his sleeve. There was something hard inside.
「あっ！ ありました！」
“Ah! Here it is!”
袖から出てきたのは、部屋の鍵でした。
What came out of his sleeve was his room key.
今度は、かばんに
そのとき、田中さんは思い出しました。お風呂から出た後、鍵を袖に入れたのです。
Then Tanaka remembered. After getting out of the bath, he had put the key in his sleeve.
「自分でここに入れたのに、忘れてしまいました。すみません。」
“I put it here myself, but I completely forgot. I’m sorry.”
「見つかってよかったですね。」
“I’m glad you found it.”
田中さんは安心して、笑いました。
Tanaka smiled with relief.
「今度は、すぐにかばんに入れます。」
“This time, I’ll put it straight into my bag.”
部屋に戻ると、おいしそうな夕食が用意されていました。田中さんは座る前に、かばんの中をもう一度見ました。
When he returned to his room, a delicious-looking dinner was waiting. Before sitting down, Tanaka checked inside his bag once more.
鍵は、ちゃんとそこにありました。
The key was right where it should be.
